The regions co-operating in the NWMA within the context of Interred IIC are shown on this map. The NWMA is, with some additions, composed of the so-called Centre Capitals Regions (CCR) as identified in the Community Report “Europe 2000+” supplemented with the rest of Great Britain and Ireland.
The area is characterised by its dominant position within the European Union notably through densely populated regions, concentration of economic activities, a high degree of urbanization and highly developed infrastructure networks. As a consequence of these there is a pressure on agriculture, on ecologically valuable areas, on natural resource and cultural heritage and there is congestion and pollution (European Commission Interred IIC, 1997).
Within the NWMA, the following study areas have been selected:
